Now we’re half way through January, I’m taking a look at the upcoming eyewear trends for 2023. I do this not only because I’m passionate about great eyewear but because it makes up a significant part of my job. As a columnist for Optometry Today and an ambassador for STEPPER Eyewear and MAC Eyewear, I need to keep my finger on the fashion pulse and interpret the jargon so we know in simple terms what to expect for the new season.
Eyewear Trends 2023
My research shows that there are three distinct trends for the new season.
Design-Wise
I’ll be honest and say I found this eyewear trend quite hard to interpret! I think Kind Design is perhaps a better name because it describes sustainable innovative designs which combine high-tech processes with artistic craftsmanship. It values details and leans towards a pastel colour palette to evoke harmony and calm. STEPPER Eyewear‘s innovative TX5 material and their technical designs in titanium immediately sprung to my mind as did JFRey’s exquisite designs. In clothing terms, this is akin to pale pink yoga pants: technical materials for a zen-like comfort.
Soul Space
This trend describes eyewear with a warm, natural palette influenced by nostalgia, nature, comfort and craftsmanship. It is cosy, soft, romantic, sentimental, vintage, floral, boho. These could almost look like vintage spectacles with a story to tell. Coco Song’s Eyes in Wonderland epitomise this gentlest of trends with their gorgeously feminine eyewear and imagery. Think floral tea dresses with knitted socks and a cosy cardigan from an outfit perspective.
Full Spectrum
This eyewear trend for 2023 is much easier to interpret. The mood is eclectic with a vibrant bright colour palette of intense, exuberant hues. Anything goes from flamboyant Regency-inspired designs to upcycled “muck and brass” vibes- creating something beautiful from discarded materials. This trend is based upon flair, creativity and joie de vivre. I imagine anyone who embraces this eyewear trend will also own a patterned velvet trouser suit and fabulous green glittery platforms (like these ones of mine). I think you’ll agree that Meghan Fabulous and Pugnale have this trend in the bag.
