These two pairs of shoes could not be more different, yet each has an equally useful place in my shoe collection.
I’m going to start with these loafers. Loafers have superseded ballerinas as my flat shoe of choice. I think it’s because they give a bit more support. A neutral pair works with jeans and cigarette trousers of every colour particularly well and is ideal for those times when a sneaker isn’t quite smart enough. I’m thinking a shopping trip followed by lunch with a glass of wine.
This is the Angela by Hotter. It’s got a flexible sole and elastic panels that stop the shoe from slipping off the ankles. A perfect everyday casual flat.
The other style, I suspect will be more divisive. I’ve always had a soft spot for Dr Martens and have mentioned before my green Doc boots from my late teens. I love the fact that Poppy, now at the same age, has a vegan pair. These white leather Dr Marten sandals are a modern version of a trekking sandal. They work well with jeans and they give maxi dresses an edge. And though they may not look it, they are very comfortable- the leather is super soft. If I were cool enough to go to festivals, I’d wear them instead of Hunters. I’m not. But I do love a walk followed by a picnic for which these are perfect. They’re different to anything I’ve had before and I love them. Which, at the end of the day, is what matters.
