It was Poppy’s 20th birthday on Wednesday, her second one in lockdown. Of course, we couldn’t have a large celebration but we celebrated nonetheless with takeaway pizza on Wednesday evening when I was home from work, and a buffet and birthday cake last night.
I can’t believe she’s 20. The years have flown by and although next year will be a milestone birthday for her, this one felt like a milestone to me; I’ve been a mother for two decades. I look at Poppy and remember her as a newborn baby. I remember her learning to swim, and playing the piano and I’ve seen her blossom from a pretty girl into a beautiful woman. She’s intelligent, kind, hardworking, thoughtful and sensitive. And she’s mine. And I can’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of pride.
I wanted to feel dressed-up so I wore this puff sleeve dress with my zebra-print shoes, freshwater pearl jewellery and my favourite red lipstick.
The Perfect Pair
What is the perfect eyewear to compliment this puff sleeve dress? I think it needs to be either subtle and minimalist or bold enough to make as much of a statement as the dress does. I went for the latter and chose my grey leopard print eyewear from La Matta. The black and white colourway reflects that of the dress and the animal print is echoed in my zebra-print shoes. (See this blog post for more details about this stunning frame and this Instagram Reel to see it “live”). And, by the way, I’ve just had some new prescription lenses put in: the Essilor X4D, which from my experience, is, in my opinion, the best varifocal on the market.
