There are certain pieces that scream of golden beaches and tropical climes. This divine ombre embroidered silk kaftan dress is one of them. I only got it after I came back from Calpe and I’d almost resigned myself to the fact that I might not get to wear it until next year’s holiday. However, Ian and I spent a weekend up in the North-East at the start of August. The weather was gorgeous; plenty warm enough to spend time at Cullercoats Harbour.
The dress is from a small family-run luxurious resort wear and jewellery brand called Poppy Silk Clothing. The clothing is designed in Scotland and hand crafted in India using traditional methods. The ombre colour effect is created by hand, using an artisan dyeing method, so every kaftan dress is unique. It comes in an ocean blue (cobalt) colourway and in a hot pink too, which are both equally stunning. I got a lapis blue and turquoise silk dress from there last year which I’ve worn over and over. It’s still available on the website and this is what I love about brands like this. There are no “one-season” wonders. Instead, a collection of carefully-made, timeless clothing which can be enjoyed year after year.
At first glance it looks like the style of kaftan that pops over a bikini, indeed, it would be perfect for that. But it’s actually a dress, the skirt of which is lined, so it lends itself to all manner of summer events. I beaded flip-flops but wedge sandals or espadrilles would dress it up further.
My necklace and bracelet are also from Poppy Silk. The stones are rough cut aquamarines, one of my favourite gemstones. I wear them both frequently because they match so many of my dresses. My earrings are from a little shop in Nerja, again chosen because I have so many clothes in this colour palette.
The Perfect Pair
What is the perfect eyewear to compliment this silk kaftan dress? The turquoise ombre is beautiful, so a light or neutral colour will allow the dress to take centre stage. However, it is a statement piece so the sunglasses need to be equally strong in design. My Amalfi sunglasses by Aspinal of London tick all the right boxes. Their crystal colour doesn’t compete but the shape is strong and elegant. They are aspirational yet attainable and work perfectly with this luxurious resort-wear.
