I don’t often wear black. Not on its own if you know what I mean, especially in summer. I have black trousers, tops and accessories, but it’s rare that I wear only black. There’s no particular reason for this, other than I love colour, so I’m generally drawn to bright rather than sombre clothes. However, this stunning black sun dress by Iconique changed my mind. (You might remember that I mentioned it in the post I wrote about some neutral additions to my holiday wardrobe. Despite my love of colour, I do try to take neutral accessories on holiday to avoid excess luggage ;)) I had my eye on it last year and it wasn’t available in my size. When I was looking for a few new things to take with me to Porto Santo this year, I checked back and to my delight, it was in stock.
Flamboyant Black Sun Dress
I love everything about the dress: the sheer lace panel, the full skirt, the fluted statement sleeves. I wore mine for lunch and also over my bikini for a stroll along the beautiful beach.
You can see from the photographs that it was really quite overcast. It was like that for the majority of the time actually as well as being rather breezy. And you can see from my hair that on some days, it was downright windy. It was still warm enough to sunbathe, but nothing quite beats a bright blue sky and wall-to-wall sunshine does it?
This black sun dress is dressy enough for dinner too. A pair of wedge espadrilles and a clutch and it’s good to go.
LBD Earrings
The large hoop drop earrings are equally flamboyant and are from the aptly-named LBD dress range at Toolally. They make a fabulous statement and I wore mine with several of my holiday outfits throughout the week. They’re made from acetate, (with gold-plated fixings), so although they’re large, they are very lightweight. Not only that, they don’t get hot like some metal jewellery does in the sun and any salty-sea splashes are very easily removed!
Silver Angel Wing Pendant
I wore this silver angel wing pendant over and over too, (I layered it with another necklace with my tie-dye maxi dress). It sits at just the right place to draw the eye to the beautiful detail on the dress’s neckline.
And Finally…
I took several bikinis with me but we only photographed this one from F&F clothing. It’s out of stock now, but for future reference, it is excellent quality and fitted very well indeed. I wouldn’t hesitate to but more swimwear from there in future. And just so you know, it wasn’t a gift. It was an impulse buy from Tesco when I was doing the food shopping!

really lovely dress sweet hem…..id love this dress for my better half
Yes, the hemline is lovely!
It is a gorgeous dress Liz, I love black for Summer when it’s done this well. I think black is uncommon for a sun dress but very striking as this piece proves xx
Thank you so much Michelle. It’s really unusual isn’t it. I usually go for white sundresses but I think the frothiness of it stops it from looking austere xxx
A wonderful dress, I love the lace details! The neckline is beautiful and they are also, and very much, your earrings. And your figure … spectacular!
Oh thank you Josep-Maria. As always, your comments are so kind xxx
Lizzy, you look absolutely stunning in both the dress and the bikini! I must admit, I was a little surprised to see you in black but it looks great! That dress is beautiful – it’s exactly the kind of thing I would gravitate towards because of it’s slight Victorian / gothic feel. Gorgeous!

Oh thank you Suzy. Yes, it does have a gothic feel to it. I’m about to start your book Aphrodite’s Closet. I can’t wait! xxxx
Well I should have known that you’d make all-black look good in the summer, Liz!! The dress is beautiful – if I was someone who’d show off her legs I’d even be tempted to wear it myself despite being a fellow colour-lover…!
Sorry you’d didn’t get much full on sunshine but it does look gorgeous all the same, though you’re more stunning in that bikini than the beach!!!!!!
