A Dreamy Tulle Skirt with all of the Sparkle

If you saw my post about my weekend in London with the Over40Collective, (my best blogging friends), you might have noticed that I wore a grey tulle skirt for our photoshoot. I'd wanted a tulle skirt for quite some time but I needed to think how to style it before I invested. I wanted it to look grown-up and elegant and not like I had raided a little girl's dressing up box. It needed to be a true midi length and not a skirt that fell just below the knee, because I'm tall and I love wearing heels heels which means some skirts sometimes don't reach quite as far as they should, which can make an outfit look disproportionate.

Grey is one of my favourite colours and one which is easy to team with a myriad of other colours so I'm looking forward to styling in differently over the coming weeks and actually, I might dress it down slightly too. On this occasion though, I opted for all of the sparkle with a gunmetal sequinned top and my champagne glitter shoes, (my beloved Jimmy Choo Tahitis), and a grey wrap bracelet from my online boutique, LizzyO. The grey has actually sold out, but it is available in a soft tan which is just as pretty.

I'd like to thank Catherine, Not Dressed as Lamb, who took these photographs for me. It was lovely to work with her in this way and because she has a degree in photography and of course has had thousands of pictures taken in her own outfits, she understands every aspect of getting an image to look right and it was brilliant benefitting from her professional direction.

Getting Cosy For Christmas with Dash

I love this time of year and I unashamedly, openly and wholeheartedly love Christmas- the sparkle, the parties, the laughter, the food, the wine, the very spectacle of it. It's time for family and friends and fingers crossed, a week off work, (because right now I'm working on both January and February issues of Aspire concurrently to enable me to get all of the editorial completed before a New Year's week deadline).
My clothes reflect this excitement. In common with many, I amp up the sequins, the glitter and the metallics and wear them as much throughout the day as I do in the evenings.
But... I also love wrapping up warm and feeling cosy. I do it a lot. I'm a "soccer mom" and spend my Sunday mornings on what is often a freezing cold football pitch. I live on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and baby, it gets cold outside. I love the feeling of wrapping up warm, donning a woolly hat and scarf and striding out in the crisp morning air, feeling invigorated and vital, yet warm and cocooned in snuggly layers.

My pompom bobble hat (£15) and matching pompom bobble scarf (£25) are from Dash who have some gorgeous knitwear and accessories which are perfect for such country strolls (and pitchside shenannigans). They'd make perfect gifts, are wool free, (this is a BIG thing for me as I can't wear wool because of the itch), and are definitely not just for Christmas.

And isn't this wadded jacket, also from Dash a lovely colour? I love the semi-fitted shape, the faux fur hood-lining and the fact it has zip pockets. It's warm and cosy, but not bulky, because one need not sacrifice style for practicality.

Dash is one of my favourite brands and one I work with on a regular basis so here are my cosy, yet stylish picks from their current collection...

Dash winter warmers and Christmas gift ideas

Clockwise from top left...

This gorgeous knit poncho (£69) is one of those items that will become indispensable and again, is as stylish as it is practical, the buttons setting it apart. Perfect with skinny jeans and knee high boots.

This alpaca Fairisle jumper (£59) quite naturally makes me thing of log cabins and roaring open fires. It's a neat cut so adds lots of warmth without the bulk that some knitwear can add. I like the idea of wearing this with skinny jeans and heels when inside enjoying all of the mulled wine.

Both the Fairisle penguin jumper (£29) and the Olive the Owl jumper (bottom left, £39) are slightly quirky and I'd they'd both be definite ice-breakers and worthy of being a topic of conversation. As well as with jeans, I think they'd look amazing with a pleated midi skirt and high-heeled ankle boots.

The grey luxury wool hooded parka (£129), with faux fur trim has a clean silhouette and of course lends itself to country walks and wellies. But wouldn't look amazing over a sequinned evening dress a as a nonchalant alternative to an evening jacket? Here it is in more detail.

Pop over and take a look at Dash. there are often some very good offers on and they really are a hidden gem of a brand for those that have an outdoorsy lifestyle like I do!

A Stylish Christmas Gift Guide (Tried and Tested by Me!)

I think I may have mentioned just how much I love Christmas and for me, the whole party season begins with my October birthday. From then on, it's a time for celebration, for getting dressed up, for sparkling and for spending time with friends and family, which is of course, the most enjoyable thing. I love decorating our home and I love buying gifts too, so here are a few of my favourite things this season and because I feel I can only recommend things I have seen, used or own myself, everything here is mine. I took all of these photographs myself but there are links to all of the items so you can see stock images too.

I'll start, if I may, with my jewellery and accessories from Lizzy O, my own online boutique. The Lizzy O range is an affordable collection of wrap bracelets, statement pendants and scarves. I source, select and buy them myself and they are at a very attainable price point (£12.50-£15). I choose things that will lift an outfit by adding sparkle, (the bracelets are super-sparkly), or colour and pattern (the scarves). The pendants are both eye-catching and simple which makes them versatile for both day and evening.
Delivery is free to the UK and £3.95 to the rest of the world. I wrap the jewellery in organza bags and tissue paper so it is ready to present and everything, including the scarves of course, is lightweight and easy to post. I can also post straight to the desired recipient, if you let me know the delivery address when you place the order.

As well as my own Lizzy O brand, I stock a curated range of Danon jewellery. Danon is an Israeli brand and the pieces are crafted from precious metal platings, semi-precious stones, Swarovski crystals and freshwater pearls. They mix and match beautifully, so for example, the stars and pineapples look fabulous together. The bees and dragonflies compliment each other well. I can't think of another jewellery brand that offers a similar aesthetic and it is rare that I don't wear at least a few pieces of Danon each and every day.

I have added a new range of both bee and pineapple jewellery in both gold and silver so do take a look because they are fabulous and would appeal to women of all ages.

Unsurprisingly, I have a lot of jewellery and take a wide selection with me if I travel. This mini white leather jewellery box is beautiful and is perfect for keeping everything together whilst also protecting it.

Who doesn't love getting underwear at Christmas?I wrote quite a lengthy blog post recently about the best underwear and a guide for men buying it for their partner and featured quite a few sets by Next. I have been getting most of my lingerie from Next for as long as I can remember. They offer a wide range of styles, colours and shapes. This tartan set is my current favourite. The racer back, front-fastening bra is a little different and is a practical option because of the straps and because it looks very smooth under close-fitting clothing.

Ilex London is one of my favourite handbag brands. They offer the most beautiful leather bags in a wide selection of colours and styles. I have the big sister of the one below, the Fiona shoulder bag in Scarlet, that I use frequently, (and wore on my birthday with skinny jeans and a sequinned top), I also have a mustard yellow hobo, (that I wore with matching mustard yellow heels and a slogan sweatshirt in spring and then recently with a 70s style dress and knee-high boots for my visit to the Next press show in London) and the Alexa grab bag in clay, (that I wore with a floral bodycon midi dress and sparkly Jimmy Choos for my university renuion, as well as with an autumnal top and jeans more recently), such is its versatility.

This cross-body clutch bag is the perfect size for evening use but it isn't so small that it couldn't be used during the day either. (You can see in this blog post when I teamed it with a red ruffle dress). The close-up images below shows the details- it has a detachable chain strap and the quilting is simply lovely.

Katie Loxton pouches are fast becoming covetable, cult items for all age groups. My 15 year-old daughter Poppy loves them as much as I do. They can be used as a clutch or a cosmetic bag and I use a pale blue one I have for travel documents and passports. They come in a rainbow of colours, each with appropriate wording, in this case, "good as gold."

As you know, I work from home so like to feel warm and comfortable and I like to wear slippers during winter, (flip-flops in summer).  These by The White Company have been the best I have ever found and I'm wearing them as I type. They're sturdy yet soft and cosy and would be a welcome addition to many a Christmas stocking.

I love accessoring my home as much as I do my outfits and I burn candles all year round. Every November, I invest in a selection of Winter candles from the White Company. To me, there simply isn't another home fragrance I like as much and it epitomises the scent of Christmas. This limited edition gift set has two votives in mercurised glass which can be used to hold a tealight once the candle has burned down.

I get the most enormous pleasure from every aspect of entertaining, from cooking and baking, to dressing the table. Generally, we eat family-style, and I use bakeware that works from oven to table to save on space and washing up. This gorgeous heart-shaped baker is ideal for roast potatoes, rice-pudding, salad, bread rolls, the list is endless.

I hope this has given you some ideas. Happy shopping and have a lovely weekend,

Leopard Print Jacket, Black Leather Leather Ankle Boots and The Lotus Press Day

I love wearing animal print and leopard in particular. I treat it as a neutral because there are very few things it doesn't compliment. Those with a penchant for pattern mixing can add florals or stripes by way of contrast and those who want to use it to add impact to a simple outfit can add it as a statement piece. I do both and never tire of it.

The ring is a new addition to the Danon bee collection at Lizzy O. In fact there are several new lines including a different style of bee, (more of a honey bee), and pineapples which are available in both silver and gold, so do take a look. They make prefect presents.

Danon Swarovski crystal set bee ring

This particular leopard print is even better than most because contains has both grey and tan tones and I think it works beautifully with the tan buckle detail on my black ankle boots, and it's these I want to showcase today.

Lotus black and tan ankle boots

The scalloped edge is so unusual- such a subtle detail yet one which makes a big difference to the overall look.

Lotus black and tan ankle boots

The cut is slightly scooped at the front meaning they show the narrowest part of the ankle. Whereas some ankle boots cut visually across the lower leg at a wider point. As well as being very flattering, it also makes them  suitable for wearing with dresses as they look elegant and not at all "clumpy". They are also incredibly comfortable and are composed of beautifully soft leather.

The are from Lotus and I went to their SS17 press day in London at the start of the month. There are some exciting styles coming up and I particularly like the wedges (on the third photograph down from here).

And for those of us with shoe-loving men in our lives, the men's styles were very nice indeed too.

I got to the event towards the end of the day so it was nice and quiet. Freelance illustrator @amanda_alice was doing mini portraits.

I love the long fluttery eyelashes on the picture she drew of me.

And the lovely Sarah Morten @smorts was doing hair braids. When we got chatting, I discovered she had done the hair and make-up for several brides in the Skipton area.
