A Review of The George Inn, Hubberholme, The Yorkshire Dales

Regular readers know that my main day job entails writing copy for, and editing a local lifestyle magazine, Aspire. Every month, we review two restaurants, pubs or cafe and most months, I'm lucky enough undertake one of those. Over the summer, my children and I had the pleasure of visiting The George Inn. I highly recommend it, not least for the beautiful scenery that the route from Skipton takes in.

The George Inn is a traditional, historic country inn set beneath the rising fells of Langstrothdale in Upper Wharfedale. Centrally located in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, it's ideal for touring, cycling or walking being directly on the route of the Dales Way walk. The George offers accommodation in eight comfortable bedrooms, quality home-cooked food, cask beers from Black Sheep and other local breweries and an excellent selection of wines and malts.

Owners Jackie and Ed Yarrow fulfilled their ambition to provide food, drink and accommodation within the Yorkshire Dales, when they relocated from Leeds in 2013. Both were at the bar when and gave us the warmest of welcomes when we arrived to dine with them. They showed us to our table and I noticed that every other table was reserved. Ed told me that because they cater for both residents and visitors, this is often the case, so booking is advisable for evening dining.

The menu changes daily and everything is made fresh to order. To start, my daughter chose soup of the day which was carrot and vanilla, £5.95. Served with ciabatta, it was an unusual and delicious combination.

My son decided to try something new so ordered roasted bone marrow with caper and parsley salad, also served with ciabatta, £6.95, which he enjoyed. I find it hard to resist a seafood option so pan fried squid, prawns and chorizo held great appeal and did not disappoint. The combination of flavours was divine and all of the food was both beautifully presented and of generous portion.

There is an extensive wine list and I had a glass of Chenin Blanc which complimented my starter perfectly.

For their main course, both children ordered 10oz sirloin steak, £21.95, cooked to their liking and served with mushrooms, tomatoes, onion rings and served with proper chips. They both said their steak was the best they had ever eaten.

The George won both silver and bronze at the 2016 British Pie Awards so I had a chicken, smoked ham hock and leek pie served with chips and seasonal vegetables which included cabbage, carrots, mange-tout and baby peas £13.95. Packed with beautifully cooked meat and as fresh as a daisy, it is clear why these are prize-winning pies.

The children shared a dessert of blondie (white chocolate brownie), with chocolate ice-cream £6.95 and I had Baileys Crème Brûlée with an orange tuile. Utterly, utterly delicious.

We had a wonderful evening and enjoyed hearing about the history of the inn from Jackie and Ed and it was lovely to see them chat to every guest in the same way.

Well-behaved dogs are welcome in the bar and this is the couple's dog, George.

A Versatile Autumn Leaf Print Top in Shades of Teal, Petrol and Taupe

So it's now officially autumn and right on cue, the temperature has dipped and there's a decided nip in the air, both in the mornings and in the evenings. The middle of the day though is still relatively mild, so I've been continuing to wear easily removable layers.
This was yesterday's outfit, worn for a short trip to town and to the excellent local farm shop. My top is new and is from Tulchan, a brand I wrote about a few weeks ago, when I wore their grey spotted raincoat. You may remember that it's based a mere forty minute drive away, just over the border into my native county of Lancashire, (yes, I know I'm brave moving to Yorkshire). It's a very versatile shape having three-quarter length sleeves and a simple silhouette. It could very easily be dressed up with leather or coated jeans and a pair of heels for a night out, or it could be teamed with tailored trousers or a skirt for the office. I'm wearing it in what I'd class as a smart casual way with slim jeans and a jersey tweed blazer. The colour palette is beautiful with shades of petrol blue, seafoam and taupe and as with all Tulchan clothing, it's very well made.

Because it a daytime look, I added simple jewellery. My Danon long dragonfly pendant fits the bill perfectly. I do have a teal glass statement necklace though that would look stunning with this for an evening look.

The Danon T-bar leather wrap bracelet with dragonfly and heart charms is one of my favourite autumn accessories. It's incredibly comfortable and light-weight so is perfect for everyday wear, but one of the diamante wrap bracelets from my online boutique would add all of the requisite sparkle for the evening.

I popped my bag down for a moment so I could put my jacket on and our cat Socks decided she would put in an appearance and guard it. This is the Alexa grab bag by Ilex London and is a beautiful clay shade, which is an excellent neutral, especially with an autumnal palette.

My blazer is a Jersey tweed which is ideal for me because I don't like the itch of woollen tweed. It's one of my favourite styles and I have it in pale grey and brown too.

And, to finish with...some pictures from the cutting room floor.

Dressing for the Country with Dash: Pink Jumper, Dark Green Waxed Jacket and Slim, Stretchy Jeans

I don't know what it is about this time of year that fills me with such excitement and such zest for life. I've always loved autumn and have written before about the sensuality of the season- the crunch of leaves, the tactile textures of knits and of faux fur, the twinkling of candles and fairy lights and the unmistakable smokey smell of an open fire. I love the nip in the air, the misty mornings and the hazy sunshine. The burnished leaves add a warmth and a richness to summer's green palette and the light can look quite magical when shining through semi-naked trees.

I'm fortunate to live in a beautiful part of the world, just a hop and skip away from the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The outdoors plays an important part in my life and is something I enjoy enormously. I'm always on the look out for appropriate, stylish attire and Dash is increasingly becoming my go-to place for exactly that. It has undergone a revamp of late and the new collection is very nice indeed.
This whole outfit is from there and I absolutely love it. The jeans are described as slim leg, but in actual fact, they're almost a skinny fit. Super-stretchy and very comfortable, I'll wear these with a sparkly top and heels as soon as I get the opportunity.

The waxed jacket is in the most perfect shade of khaki green and has a zip fastening as well as buttons. It's a very flattering shape and is the perfect weight for transitional dressing. This also comes in "wine," a beautiful berry colour.

My birds of paradise scarf and the taupe hearts bracelet are both from Lizzy O, my own accessories website. The bracelet has a magnetic fastening and is a casual, every day style.

The pink jumper is 100% cotton and has a lovely herringbone texture. It could easily accommodate a lace-trimmed vest or cami underneath by means of an extra layer when the temperature dips a little further, or perhaps even a shirt.

And my olive leather brogue-style Chelsea boots from Lotus co-ordinate with the jacket beautifully.

The Marks and Spencer Autumn Collection: Wide Legged Trousers, Romantic White Blouse and Strappy Leopard Heels

Marks and Spencer recently contacted some of my fellow bloggers and me and invited us to choose items to the value of £200 from their Autumn Lookbook. The new season's collection is a strong one and there are more hero pieces to come. It seems that  M&S really are curating some beautiful styles that are attainable and infinitely wearable but are very definitely runway inspired.

Other than jeans, I rarely wear trousers. The Fall Winter 2016/17 catwalks showed a sea of sailor-inspired wide-legged trousers and these wide leg trousers stood out as soon as I looked at the collection. These come in three lengths: short, regular and long which is excellent, because it is essential with this style of trouser that it covers almost all of the shoe. I'm just under 5 feet 9 inches tall and chose the long leg. You'll see below that the heels I'm wearing are high and these trousers would reach the ground if I were to wear them with flats. Because the style also needs to skim rather than cling, I chose a UK size 12. They are on the large side and I think I'll have them taken in slightly just to fit a little more neatly at the waist.

The Victoriana trend has been popular for several seasons now in various guises which makes me think it has earned "wardrobe staple" status. The long sleeved romantic lace blouse is a soft cream colour, fabricated from a super soft viscose. The lace trim is equally soft and doesn't itch or rub as some lace can. The sleeves are nice and long too. Being long-limbed, I do find on occasions that full-length sleeves stop short of actually being full-length on me, so this was very pleasing. It was a very hot day when we took these photographs, warmer than most of the summer actually and I'd been wearing denim shorts. I put the blouse on with them and it looked great, so I can see versatility with it all the way through to late spring. I envisage styling it with (slightly) distressed boyfriend jeans for a less formal look and I think it would look fabulous with a leather or metallic pleated midi skirt. It also comes in a gorgeously rich teal colour too.

And now it's time for the shoes. THE SHOES. I lost my heart to these beauties as soon as I saw them in the lookbook but when they arrived and I saw them in the flesh, I actually squealed. They are simply divine. Now, to my mother's despair, my shoe of choice throughout my teens was a Doc Marten boot in a very nice shade of green and a black Doc Marten shoe for special occasions. I can hardly believe it of myself either but they complimented my tie-dye dungarees and multiple ear-piercings rather well. They may not have been dainty but they did allow my teenage feet to develop perfectly which means I can now wear the highest heels and the pointiest of styles without a second's worry and I absolutely love to do so. The double strap pointed court shoes are leather and their incredible comfort belies the 95mm heel height. They benefit from Insolia which redistributes the weight away from the balls of the feet so reducing pressure. The double strap makes them feel secure and they come in half sizes. They are available in black and berry too and I'm veeerrrry tempted to get at least one more colourway.

Here are some of my closest blogging friends wearing their outfits from the Marks and Spencer autumn collection too.

You'll see from the outfit details and prices below that my three items didn't add up to £200. The remainder went on a pair of beautifully made black leather Chelsea boots with Insolia that I'm very much looking forward to wearing throughout autumn and winter.

So well done and thank you M&S. This is definitely not an autumn of discontent.

A Floral Dress with Olive Chelsea Boots

Regular readers will know that I love brogues and wear them frequently throughout autumn, finding them a versatile, practical and stylish option. The add a touch of androgyny to an outfit and can stop a very girly outfit from looking twee. If the ground is wet though, sometimes a brogue doesn't quite keep the feet dry enough, which is where these ankle boots come in. A Chelsea boot style, but with brogue detail, these leather boots from Lotus have a low heel and come in black, brown, denim blue as well as olive which I'm wearing here. They're beautifully made, comfortable and feel robust enough to trample through as many leaves as one would want to this autumn. They will of course look great with jeans, but I like wearing them with a dress too, especially while the weather is still relatively mild as it has been of late.

You may recall that over summer,  I wore this dress with tan strappy sandals, I love the muted yet bold floral pattern and think the olive boots compliment it beautifully.
