A Round-Up of What I Packed and Wore for My Week in Nerja

As any fashion blogger will tell you, the weather has a significant impact on the ability to get photographs taken for outfit posts, so having a week of uninterrupted sunshine plus stunning scenery made every outfit shoot a complete pleasure when I was on holiday in Nerja with family this summer. It was my first sunshine holiday for two years so being able to eek it out via my blog gave me the utmost pleasure. I had so many lovely compliments about each and every outfit I shared and had a few requests for one post in which I talk about my holiday wardrobe as a whole, so here is what I took, what I wore, what I needed more of and what I could have managed without.

Swimwear
For seven days I took two bikinis and a one-piece swimsuit. I perhaps would have liked one more bikini, just to ring the changes and because I choose to wear a bikini rather than a swimsuit. I wore the swimsuit on those afternoons during which I was playing in the sea with the children. If like me, you love being tipped unceremoniously out of a huge rubber ring by your teenage son, the swimsuit reduces the potential of a wardrobe malfunction when compared to a bikini. In fact, I think a swimsuit is a better choice if partaking in any water sports or beach activities.

Bikini, swimsuits, Nerja, over 40s

Beach Cover-Ups
I took four in total, three of which were long enough for me to wear for breakfast and an informal lunch. The red one wasn't, but was lovely when on the beach and around the pool. These were invaluable and I would have liked another two.

Yellow beach dress, embroidered kaftans, beach cover-ups, over 40

Dresses
Regular readers will know that I'm a girl who loves a dress. I find them easier to accessorise than separates and in hot weather, more comfortable than having a skirt or trouser waistband. I took seven to wear to dinner in the hotel, plus one day dress. I wore a dress to travel in too. While I was there I bought a white midi-dress which I actually wore twice because I love it and because there will be very few opportunities for me to wear it in England which meant two that I had packed remained unworn. With the exception of the navy striped maxi, the dresses I took were all within a colour palette of red and coral, so reducing the number of accessories needed.

Shoes
Shoes are my thing and I have countless pairs at home which can make selecting just a few, quite a difficult task. A pair of flip-flops or sliders is essential. I took the flip-flops that best compliment my bikinis and swimsuit. Next a pair of flat sandals. I did in fact take two pairs, a tan and a silver of the same style. I wore them an equal number of times but in fact could have managed with just the tan. I also took a pair of high-heeled tan leather strappy sandals. They were specifically to wear with the coral asymmetric dress, because flats wouldn't have looked right, but they only got worn for a few hours that particular evening, so that's something to think about for next time. Is it worth packing a pair of shoes that will only work with one outfit, (particularly when one's luggage allowance is only 22kg. Mine weighed in at a rather nerve-wracking 21.8kg!)
While I was there, I bought a pair of flat tan espadrilles too which I wore with the white midi-dress on both occasions.

Accessories
A floppy, lightweight straw hat is essential in any hot country, especially if eating al-fresco during the day, or perusing the shops. A wide-brimmed one will protect delicate shoulders as well as the face and neck.
For the beach I took a stylish navy and white raffia tote plus a soft red leather clutch to take to dinner. I also bought a cute raffia clutch when I was there. The beach bag doubled up as hand-luggage and I feel that because the red clutch worked with all of my dresses, I needed nothing else.

Jewellery
Owning an jewellery and accessories website, Lizzy O,  means that I inevitably have a lot of jewellery! I took two diamante wrap bracelets- one bright pink and one turquoise, five Danon bangles because I like to stack them, a Danon stars ring in matt gold and a pair of matching earrings (all from Lizzy O) plus a pair of small stud earrings. It was so hot that any more would have been excessive and actually, I didn't wear the turquoise wrap bracelet.

Thank you for the lovely feedback, compliments and comments about my holiday outfit posts, all listed below, in which you can see full details of my outfits plus some stunning images of what is a beautiful town.

I hope you found this round-up useful -I'm already looking forward to returning to Nerja the same time next year.

Multi-Floral Dress with a Silver Leather Tote Bag

At the end of July, I wrote a post about working from home during the summer holidays, (with teenagers), and one of the suggestions I made was to plan days out or trips away. We did just that and booked a mini-break to London, (on a budget), and had a brilliant few days. I will at some point put a blog post together about what we did there because I'm sure I'm not alone in having a teenage girl and boy and finding it increasingly difficult to please both. This is, I think, even harder when one is a lone parent as I am.

We went by train and traveled lightly, a task made easier because of the warm weather forecast. I took three easy to wear dresses, a pair of sandals, a pair of pull-on pumps (skater shoes? I'm never sure what they're called) and a fabulous new silver leather tote bag, handcrafted by Manchester-based Edward de Lacy.
The tote is made from a beautiful metallic silver Italian leather and has a blue external zip on one side and a red one on the other plus a detachable red leather tassel. The tote can also be worn as a cross body bag or on the shoulder courtesy of the adjustable long strap. It is capacious enough to accommodate a purse, camera, iPad mini, phone, make-up bag and more but is itself not heavy and is very comfortable to wear.

My bag is a one-off in the silver colour but the same style can be made to order in most colours, so do take a look at Edward de Lacy's website and his Etsy store. The quality is outstanding and because they're handcrafted, every item is unique.

Striped Cocoon Dress, Statement Necklace and Rose-gold Wrap Bracelet.

It's rather obvious from my most recent posts that I had a wonderful family holiday in Nerja and I have thoroughly enjoyed sharing my outfit pictures from there. As with most good things, it came to an end and it was back to work and back to real life. That being said, I'm fortunate to have a collection of jobs that I love and as part of my role at my main job, (I'm the copywriter and editor of local Skipton-based lifestyle magazine, Aspire for those that don't know), I have the opportunity to undertake food reviews on quite a regular basis. I can take a friend or companion of my choice and we are obliged, yes obliged to order three courses which I photograph, eat and review. On this occasion, I took both of my children which was lovely in itself. Blessed with a healthy appetite, I find this no hardship, but I do think about what I wear in order to remain comfortable so usually opt for a loose-ish dress. This is a new dress that I bought for less than 20 Euros, when in Nerja. I'm a huge fan of stripes and I very much like the unusual cut. I like to add either a scarf (floral or animal print usually) or a statement necklace when wearing stripes and opted for the latter on this occasion, as it was a warm evening.

My New Role as The Kaleidoscope Blogger Expert

Back in spring I wrote a post about time-management and self-care, entitled "How to Do It All and Stay Sane". Among the things I wrote about were the ambitions I have for my blog, one of which was to become a brand ambassador by the end of 2016. Well, I'm thrilled to say that it has happened. I'm the new Blogger Expert for Kaleidoscope. The brand is based in Bradford which isn't too far from me here in Skipton and after collaborating on a few posts, (including the one in which I'm wearing the  navy and white prom dress that you see in all of my profile pictures), they invited me to meet the team and there the plan was hatched.

So what does my role entail? Each month for the next six months I'll be writing a blog post for the Kaleidoscope style blog about a particular trend or style and wearing something from Kaleidoscope relating to that. I'll be attending press shows and will be sharing news of new and upcoming collections. You may remember that I attended the AW16 Press Show in May, met the designer, Kirsten Emery and viewed the new collections, which are now available.

This floral print tie neck dress is from the new Coastal Idyll collection. I love the empire-line style and the flared sleeves. The neck tie gives it an extra-feminine touch and the floral print, although bold, is easy to wear because of the soft colour palette. We all know I like a hard-working dress and this is no exception. It's perfect for a cool summer's day or evening when teamed with sandals and I envisage it with a tweed blazer and brogues in autumn, with boots, tights and faux fur in winter and with a denim jacket and wedges next spring.

A Red Jersey Maxi Dress, Silver Sandals and No Jewellery. (Because I Forgot).

Well, I think I've managed to eek out my summer holiday to Nerja rather well by posting my outfits along with photographs of the beach and of the architecture, but this is the penultimate one (one more about a cute nautical swimsuit and matching cover-up still to come and then I'll write a summary of my holiday wardrobe by way of a packing post). From my previous Nerja posts, it'll have been apparent that much like when I'm at home, a dress is my go-to option for most occasions, be that a work meeting, a meal out or a girls night in. From a practical point of view, a dress takes up less room in a suitcase than separates and is easy to accessorise- a piece or two of jewellery,a pair of shoes and bag is all that's needed. I find a dress infinitely more comfortable too than say a skirt and top, especially in hot weather and especially when eating because there is no interference from one's waistband.

This bright red maxi dress was an impulse buy shortly before I went away. It was on display, in the sale and in my size and I knew it would be perfect for dinner in Nerja. I love the flattering folds. I added flat silver sandals and  didn't add any jewellery because I forgot to!

Red Fifties Style Sundress with Synchronised Swimmers Print.

I have a few favourite style eras including the 1920s and the1940s but for me, the romance and glamour of summers by the sea is epitomised by the 1950s, with nautical styles, breton stripes and printed sundresses. I'm thinking Audrey Hepburn in St Tropez.

It was the quirky synchronised swimmers print that appealed to me when I chose this dress, along with the pockets, the buttons, the sweetheart neckline, the voluminous skirt and the rouched shoulder straps. Everything about it really.

I don't have very many photographs because my son was taking his turn and there were a lot of people walking by. He was on this occasion quite willing to take some, because the chances of him being seen photographing me in public by someone he knew were infinitesimally small, given we were in another country but, he is a young teenager after all, so understandably didn't want to be there any longer than he had to!

Embroidered Kaftans, Holiday Cover-Ups- What I Wore in Nerja

My most recent blog posts have been about my holiday in Nerja- in particular about what I wore- and in one of them, I wrote about how useful I found my beach cover-ups and kaftans to be and shared pictures of a yellow lace beach dress. Here are two kaftans that proved to be indispensable for taking me from breakfast to beach to an informal lunch and back through the hotel.

I got both at a greatly reduced price in the Boden sale at the end of last summer once I knew we were having a beach holiday abroad. This time of year is a great time to buy holiday essentials as most retailers enter the final phase of their summer sales. I've never been one to wear things for just one season, but I think swimwear and beachwear more than anything can be worn year after year and still look current, especially because most of us will only have a week or two during which we will wear it.

These kaftans are semi-sheer, lightweight, easy to wear and comfortable. The embroidery detail is lovely and the tassels just add something that really appeals. I'm loving tassels and pompoms right now...

Floral Eco Maxi-Dress with Bright Accessories.

Maxi-dresses and hot summer nights are a match made in heaven but even more so when a door in a complimentary and divine shade of blue is involved. I first featured this door in my previous blog post in which I was wearing a white midi-dress with espadrilles, bought in Nerja, where we were staying when on holiday last week. It's so lovely, I simply had to use it as a backdrop for another outfit and this white maxi dress with the vibrant floral pattern in reds and blues seemed the perfect choice. The dress is another one by eco-brand Braintree but bought from a small independent shop close to where I live in Skipton. It's composed of bamboo-derived viscose and as such is soft and lightweight and drapes beautifully.

The sparkly bright pink wrap bracelet is from my own accessories website, Lizzy O. There are several styles and colours (including turqouise, rose-gold, silver, black and leopard-print), and they are ideal in warmer weather because they're lightweight and comfortable. For the duration of the Rio Olympics, I am offering a 10% discount on everything, (Danon jewellery, wrap bracelets, pendants and scarves/sarongs), with the code RIO.

It is worth noting that at the time of writing the dress is reduced at From The Source from £59.90 to £42 (mail order is available). It is still full-price on the Braintree website. I'm a UK dress size 10-12, 5 ft 9 tall and am wearing a size small.

White Midi Dress and Tan Espadrilles

The last few months have seen me increasingly drawn to the midi length. It's not an easy length to wear and it has to fall at exactly the right place to avoid sitting at the widest part of the calf, (which if you have muscular calves like I do, is not a flattering look). Nerja has several streets lined with beautiful shops. One or two are a little "touristy" but because it is a relatively unspoiled holiday town, most are filled with an array of clothing, leather goods, shoes and accessories. I had it in my mind before I went that I wanted a white midi dress, a pair of espadrilles and a raffia clutch bag, preferably adorned with pompoms. Imagine my utter joy when I happened across the perfect dress, in the perfect length, followed in the very next shop, by a pair of lace-up tan espadrilles and a raffia clutch (which doesn't have pompoms, but does have a tassel). And all for just 50 Euros. To add further joy, we found this beautiful blue door (which I've shared a few times on Instagram already) which proved to the perfect back-drop for taking outfit photographs.

I mentioned previously that we stayed in a hotel and had both breakfast and dinner there. The evening meals were a combination of a la carte and buffet service, with one meal served al-fresco on the terrace overlooking the beach. The chefs were on hand serving freshly prepared dishes and it was heavenly listening to the waves and watching the sun go down.
