Skinny Jeans with a Striped Sweatshirt and Colourblock Heels.

Do you ever get a pair of shoes and want to wear them with everything? I'm feeling that way about these colourblock heels. I wore them with a red midi skirt last weekend and then again with skinny jeans and this striped sweatshirt earlier this week for a restaurant review.

I'm a girly girl and favour dresses for special occasions and for eating out, but it was cold and the restaurant in question was actually a village pub so jeans dressed up with heels was the perfect solution.
And that's the thing about a great pair of heels. Pop them on with either skinny jeans or boyfriend jeans, add a co-ordinating bag and the outfit looks polished, presentable and good to go.

Sweatshirts are a relatively new acquisition to my wardrobe and as a lover of the breton stripe and all of its variants, this one grabbed my attention. I like the fact that it is slightly cropped so can be worn with a skirt and the boxy shape which gives it structure. A smart sweat I suppose.  I envisage this one shorts and pumps for a picnic on the beach.

The colourblock t-bar court shoes are made from the softest leather and are as comfortable as they are stylish. They're quite a generous fitting and if you're between sizes, I'd suggest sizing downwards. Out of stock in my usual 41 (UK 7), I took a chance on a 40 which resulted in a (rather ecstatic) Cinderella moment. And for those that prefer neutrals, they come in an equally covetable black and nude.

A Red Midi Skirt with Red, White and Blue Colourblock Shoes

March and April are always busy socially as we celebrate the birthdays of a number of my family and friends and we brought this particular party season to a close on Sunday with a lunch for my son who was 13 and my sister-in-law who was 30.

My red midi skirt is from the Gok Wan range for Tu and is in the most vibrant shade with the added bonus of pockets. I'm finding myself increasingly drawn to the midi length this season, finding it elegant and romantic and as much as I will always love a tunic dress, I'm enjoying wearing something different.

A voluminous skirt calls for a simple and streamlined top.
Bardot styles work well, (by drawing the eye across the shoulders, they balance the width of the skirt), as do slim fitting t-shirts that can be tucked in. A midi skirt will even work well with a sweatshirt if it's the right shape. Take a look at my Pinterest board for more inspiration on how to style a midi skirt.
I've always loved Broderie Anglaise and this top with its Peter Pan collar is at least three years old and I wear it time and time again.

The vibrant orange-red is best complimented by gold jewellery and the Danon double star ring is proving to be THE piece of the season. Available from my online boutique Lizzy O in both matt silver and matt gold, they are hand-crafted in Israel, so every one is unique. You can see my fellow blogger and friend Catherine from Not Dressed as lamb wearing hers here. My next newsletter will be out on 1st May with an exclusive discount code for Lizzy O, so sign up by filling in the form in the right hand side bar.

The midi can be a tricky length to master, but the right shoes make all the difference and although I have worn a midi skirt with brogues, I prefer wearing with a heel. The trick is look for a skirt, the hem of which sits below the widest part of the calf. If you have slim ankles, draw the eye towards them with a statement shoe.

My colourblock heels are from Kaleidoscope and are featured in their current #SoakItUp TV advertising campaign. They are beautifully made in the softest leather and the red, white and blue combination is perfect for wearing with jeans, breton stripes and with nautical styles.

Pink Pussy Bow Blouse, Skinny Jeans and Floral Heels

March and April are always filled with of a multitude of celebrations because both of my children, one of my brothers, my mum and my sister-in-law all have birthdays. Among these are Easter and Mother's Day so it means we see more of our most loved ones and it means I bake a lot of cake. My son turned 13 on Friday and today, my sister-in-law is 30 and at their mutual request, I am making a curry and a cake for a joint celebration.

This outfit is from last night, worn for another birthday celebration at my friend's house. She lives a mere tottering distance from me so negating the need for either flat shoes or a taxi.

Blush pink has been a favourite of  mine all season and this pussy bow blouse is ultra feminine. I've been favouring boyfriend jeans of late but felt the need for something a little darker and more fitted, to balance out the easy fit of the top.

My jewellery is also ultra-feminine and is absolutely beautiful. From Anna Lou of London, the ceramic cuff with cut out heart and the heart shaped ring set with gorgeously sparkly cubic zirconia is perfect for a romantic like me.

And to finish the look off perfectly, my floral shoes, a perfectly chosen Valentine's gift from Adam.

Places to Eat in Yorkshire: The Kings Head, Kettlewell

Here in North Yorkshire, we were lucky enough to welcome the Grand Depart of the Tour de France in 2014. The success of that led to last year's Tour de Yorkshire, an event that will place again next weekend 29th-30th April. Because of this I thought it might be useful to share a food review that I did at a lovely country pub in Kettlewell which I'll add to the rest of my North Yorkshire restaurant reviews, so those visiting the area can have a few ideas of where is good to eat in Skipton, the surrounding areas and The Yorkshire Dales.

This is first and foremost a style blog, so it would be remiss of me not to mention my outfit. It was February when I did the review and although I blogged about it at the time, here are a few photographs of what I wore which was a Mint Velvet dipped hem, zipped front shirt dress with opaque tights and high-heeled black suede ankle boots.
This look could easily be adapted for today's spring weather by losing the opaque tights and teaming it with a pair of wedge sandals or peep-toe boots.

This is a spring version of the dress from the current SS16 range at Mint Velvet and is a very similar print and shape.

As I said earlier, it was February when my friend Sally and I dined at The Kings head in Kettlewell. We were afforded a warm welcome by the staff and by the open fire set in a large Inglenook, a beautiful focal point in this lovely country pub.

We each ordered a glass of Prosecco (£3.50) and perused the menu which is displayed on a large blackboard on the wall.

The food served is British with a modern take on pub classics. To start, Sally ordered black pudding and chorizo with parsley mash, poached egg and mustard sauce. This was a beautifully presented and substantial starter which would have sufficed as a small main course or as a delicious brunch (£8.95).

I had seared king scallops with pea puree, black pudding, crispy samphire and tomato sauce (£10.95). This was divine. The pea puree was beautifully sweet and the samphire added a little texture to the velvety scallops.

For her main course Sally had Chicken Wensleydale, a large chicken breast stuffed with apricots and Wensleydale cheese served with heritage potatoes, air-dried ham and a mushroom cream sauce (£15.50). It was succulent and full of delicate flavours, all of which complimented each other perfectly.

For my main course, I chose fish pie with a cheese crust served with a pan of peas (£14.50). The large chunks of fish were tender and perfectly seasoned and the cheese crust elevated it to the status of being the best fish pie I have ever eaten.

Wines are available by the bottle and by the glass and we each had a glass of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc which complimented our main course beautifully.

Dessert was divine and I had salted caramel tart served with chocolate sorbet.  It was rich but not heavy and the chocolate and salted caramel were a heavenly combination.

Sally was equally enthused with her rhubarb and ginger pudding and I can confirm by having stolen a spoonful that it was indeed heavenly.

The Kings Head is a jewel in Kettlewell’s crown. It is the perfect place to stop for lunch or dinner after a country walk and with food of the highest quality is well worth a visit.

Navy Striped Shirt with Boyfriend Jeans and Leopard Print Shoes

Navy stripes are never far away in Spring Summer and and this dipped hem shirt with its nod to the nautical brings with it a daydream of warm sunshine and sparkling sea. I love the unusual shape and how it hangs. The longer hemline at the back, coupled with the dropped shoulder and wide sleeves give it an informality and a rather carefree feeling and one that is different that of a classic breton.

It's by Kaleidoscope, (as is the gorgeous navy and white prom dress that I'm wearing in my profile pictures), and you may have seen the #SoakItUp tv advert featuring the highlights of their summer collection, from which I have a few more items ready for my own summer holiday.

My clutch is made from the softest leather and is in a beautiful shade of red. It is large enough to fit the essentials including an iPad mini and the wrist strap makes it a very practical choice.

Mixing stripes and animal print is probably my favourite pattern cocktail and the patent leather leopard print mid-heeled shoes and the diamantes that adorn my wrap bracelet add a subtle touch of shine and sparkle to the ensemble.

Embroidered Cropped Cardigan, Boyfriend Jeans and Leopard Print Shoes

Today's look is a new combination and one I'm disproportionately pleased with for several reasons. The main one is because I love every individual element but it's also because I feel very comfortable in it. My boyfriend jeans are currently my most frequently worn item but look completely different when styled with these leather patent leopard print heels rather than with the Chelsea boots that make up my habitual, working-from-home uniform.

The white embellished cardigan is from Gok Wan's collection for Tu at Sainsburys and it's very nice indeed. The embroidery and matt black sequins add everything to this simple style which is both wearable and versatile. I have several skirts that it will compliment beautifully when worn open over a simple top, or buttoned-up as a top in its own right.

Shades of Grey, Snakeprint (and Win a Maxwell Scott Make-Up Bag)

I've written a lot lately about multi-tasking and the blog post I wrote last week titled "How to Do It All and Stay Sane" has been one of the most popular I've ever written. It seems to have struck a chord with a lot of women and I've been overwhelmed with the comments, emails and positive feedback I've received.

Yesterday I had meetings with clients about whom I'm writing for the June issue of Aspire. After that, I met a woman- now a friend- about whom I'd written previously. She and I hit it off immediately and we kept in touch after realising we had a lot in common. After reading the aforementioned post, she asked if we could meet for lunch and even though it was only the second time we'd met, we could have chatted all day. That is the lovely, lovely thing about my job(s). Meeting new people is something I always enjoy but making new friends is the best bonus I could wish for and the support that we, multi-tasking, hard-working, strong women, can give each other is remarkable.

We talked about a lot of things including the feeling that it's the small things that make a difference to managing busy lives. As we left, she complimented me on my handbag and compared it to her own capacious tote which she said was in need of organisation. I realised then that as I had gone from one meeting to another and then to lunch and beyond, I hadn't once needed to rummage in my bag, and we all know how frustrating that is. This confirmed that yes, small things do make a big difference to the smooth- running of everyday life.

This elegant bowling bag, the Liliana S by Maxwell Scott is absolutely ideal for business and pleasure. It's medium size and the beautiful shine on the leather deems it perfect for day to evening use.

The Liliana S, (S for small-there's a larger travel bag version), has three internal zipped pockets, large enough for an iPad mini, and a phone holder. It comes with a long detachable strap for when one's hands need to be free for cocktails and canapes, (or, perhaps more realistically in my case, coffee and a sandwich on the go). The red lining is both vibrant and hard wearing. My bag is night black leather but it is available in chestnut tan and dark brown too.
