It might be because I always loved every second at school and university that I like this time of year. I was always so excited to see my friends again and to make a fresh start with new stationery. Or it might be because my birthday is in early October which in our family at least, heralds the start of the party season. I love the colours and textures of the season, both in nature and in fashion. The crackle and smell of an open fire, the crunch of leaves underfoot. Hearty soups and casseroles, red wine, scented candles, fairy lights, bubble baths- it's a very sensuous time of year. Cosy layers, boots, scarves, tights, I love them all.
From a practical point of view, I embrace autumn because the garden demands less of my time or at least the lawn does. I carry my cup of tea into the garden and take my hat of to Mother Nature for knowing when it's good to stop and re-charge her batteries for a while, which she does quite unashamedly, while letting my beloved hydrangeas enchant me with their faded beauty. And yet, while to some it may seem like a time when something good has come to an end, I see it as a time of beginnings. Of excitement, of anticipation, of feeling on the cusp of something magical. And this year, I cannot wait.
