Regular readers know that my main day job entails writing copy for, and editing a local lifestyle magazine, Aspire. Every month, we review two restaurants, pubs or cafe and most months, I’m lucky enough undertake one of those. Over the summer, my children and I had the pleasure of visiting The George Inn. I highly recommend it, not least for the beautiful scenery that the route from Skipton takes in.

The
George Inn is a traditional, historic country inn set beneath the rising fells
of Langstrothdale in Upper Wharfedale. Centrally located in the Yorkshire Dales
National Park, it’s ideal for touring, cycling or walking being directly on
the route of the Dales Way walk. The George offers accommodation in eight comfortable
bedrooms, quality home-cooked food, cask beers from
Black Sheep and other local breweries and an excellent selection of wines and
malts.

Owners
Jackie and Ed Yarrow fulfilled their ambition to provide food, drink and
accommodation within the Yorkshire Dales, when they relocated from Leeds in
2013. Both were at the bar when and gave us the
warmest of welcomes when we arrived to dine with them. They showed us to our
table and I noticed that every other table was reserved. Ed told me that
because they cater for both residents and visitors, this is often the case, so booking is advisable for evening dining.

The
menu changes daily and everything is made fresh to order. To start, my daughter chose
soup of the day which was carrot and vanilla, £5.95. Served with ciabatta, it
was an unusual and delicious combination.

My son decided to try something new so
ordered roasted bone marrow with caper and parsley salad, also served with
ciabatta, £6.95, which he enjoyed. I find it hard to resist a seafood option so
pan fried squid, prawns and chorizo held great appeal and did not disappoint.
The combination of flavours was divine and all of the food was both beautifully
presented and of generous portion.

There is an extensive wine list and I had a glass of Chenin Blanc which complimented my starter perfectly.

For
their main course, both children ordered 10oz sirloin steak, £21.95, cooked
to their liking and served with
mushrooms, tomatoes, onion rings and served with proper chips. They both said
their steak was the best they had ever eaten.

The George won both silver and bronze at the
2016 British Pie Awards so I had a chicken, smoked ham hock and leek pie served
with chips and seasonal vegetables which included cabbage, carrots, mange-tout
and baby peas £13.95. Packed with beautifully cooked meat and as fresh as a
daisy, it is clear why these are prize-winning pies.

The children shared a dessert of blondie (white chocolate brownie), with chocolate
ice-cream £6.95 and I had Baileys Crème Brûlée with an orange tuile. Utterly,
utterly delicious.

We
had a wonderful evening and enjoyed hearing about the history of the inn from
Jackie and Ed and it was lovely to see them chat to every guest in the same
way.

Well-behaved dogs are welcome in the bar and this is the couple’s dog, George.

So it’s now officially autumn and right on cue, the temperature has dipped and there’s a decided nip in the air, both in the mornings and in the evenings. The middle of the day though is still relatively mild, so I’ve been continuing to wear easily removable layers.

This was yesterday’s outfit, worn for a short trip to town and to the excellent local farm shop. My top is new and is from Tulchan, a brand I wrote about a few weeks ago, when I wore their grey spotted raincoat. You may remember that it’s based a mere forty minute drive away, just over the border into my native county of Lancashire, (yes, I know I’m brave moving to Yorkshire). It’s a very versatile shape having three-quarter length sleeves and a simple silhouette. It could very easily be dressed up with leather or coated jeans and a pair of heels for a night out, or it could be teamed with tailored trousers or a skirt for the office. I’m wearing it in what I’d class as a smart casual way with slim jeans and a jersey tweed blazer. The colour palette is beautiful with shades of petrol blue, seafoam and taupe and as with all Tulchan clothing, it’s very well made.

Because it a daytime look, I added simple jewellery. My Danon long dragonfly pendant fits the bill perfectly. I do have a teal glass statement necklace though that would look stunning with this for an evening look.

The Danon T-bar leather wrap bracelet with dragonfly and heart charms is one of my favourite autumn accessories. It’s incredibly comfortable and light-weight so is perfect for everyday wear, but one of the diamante wrap bracelets from my online boutique would add all of the requisite sparkle for the evening.

I popped my bag down for a moment so I could put my jacket on and our cat Socks decided she would put in an appearance and guard it. This is the Alexa grab bag by Ilex London and is a beautiful clay shade, which is an excellent neutral, especially with an autumnal palette.

My blazer is a Jersey tweed which is ideal for me because I don’t like the itch of woollen tweed. It’s one of my favourite styles and I have it in pale grey and brown too.

And, to finish with…some pictures from the cutting room floor.

I don’t know what it is about this time of year that fills me with such excitement and such zest for life. I’ve always loved autumn and have written before about the sensuality of the season- the crunch of leaves, the tactile textures of knits and of faux fur, the twinkling of candles and fairy lights and the unmistakable smokey smell of an open fire. I love the nip in the air, the misty mornings and the hazy sunshine. The burnished leaves add a warmth and a richness to summer’s green palette and the light can look quite magical when shining through semi-naked trees.

I’m fortunate to live in a beautiful part of the world, just a hop and skip away from the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The outdoors plays an important part in my life and is something I enjoy enormously. I’m always on the look out for appropriate, stylish attire and Dash is increasingly becoming my go-to place for exactly that. It has undergone a revamp of late and the new collection is very nice indeed.
This whole outfit is from there and I absolutely love it. The jeans are described as slim leg, but in actual fact, they’re almost a skinny fit. Super-stretchy and very comfortable, I’ll wear these with a sparkly top and heels as soon as I get the opportunity.

The waxed jacket is in the most perfect shade of khaki green and has a zip fastening as well as buttons. It’s a very flattering shape and is the perfect weight for transitional dressing. This also comes in “wine,” a beautiful berry colour.

My birds of paradise scarf and the taupe hearts bracelet are both from Lizzy O, my own accessories website. The bracelet has a magnetic fastening and is a casual, every day style.

The pink jumper is 100% cotton and has a lovely herringbone texture. It could easily accommodate a lace-trimmed vest or cami underneath by means of an extra layer when the temperature dips a little further, or perhaps even a shirt.

And my olive leather brogue-style Chelsea boots from Lotus co-ordinate with the jacket beautifully.
