Today was the final day proper of our holiday in Woolacombe. Tomorrow we face the long drive home so will leave early doors.

It’s been the most wonderful experience. The first holiday alone with my children. We’ve had a busy and, on occasions, difficult few months so I felt particularly in need of some time with them to relax, to talk and to enjoy the company of the two beautiful, intelligent young people who fill my life in equal measures with utter love, pride, joy, mess and stress.

This week has achieved all of the above and more. It’s been perfect and I feel quite tearful at the thought of going home.

Their favourite haunt for brunch was the Beachcomber Cafe, so it seemed fitting to eat there this morning, on the balcony, overlooking Woolacombe Beach. The chocolate milkshake is to die for.

We sat on the beach all day and chatted about anything and everything. It was lovely to converse for several hours without the almost ubiquitous distractions of social media, i-devices and games consoles.

We played hunt the buried flip-flop and dodge the seagull(s). We ate chips and ice-cream and paddled among hundreds of tiny jellyfish.

I cannot remember spending a happier day with my children and today is one I will remember for a long time.

The evening was also beautiful so once again, we headed to Barricane Beach for Sri-Lankan curry and to enjoy the warm, laid-back atmosphere that this most popular of beach cafes has to offer.

My son skimmed stones until the sun began to fade on what has been the most precious of weeks with my children.

I’m still in love with this romantic pink lace top so wore it with shorts and sandals this evening.

Today has been brilliant. The sun shone for most of the day and we actually sat on the beach without hoodies.

We brunched at GJs pancake bar, (a favourite from when we were here two years ago), and then stayed on Woolacombe beach until late afternoon.

I have got some new sunglasses and I’m thrilled with them. It always comes as a surprise to my friends that as an optometrist by profession, (though I haven’t practised since taking a career break to raise my children a few years ago), and as a lover of all accessories, I had until I got these a matter of weeks ago, only one pair of sunglasses.

These ones are by Tommy Hilfiger at Specsavers.

I visited the Leeds branch to choose them, (Specsavers are all franchises), and I was looked after by Aga, a charming Polish optical assistant.

The benefit of going to an opticians for sunglasses is that they will be adjusted to fit correctly. Mine needed a little adjustment on the sides to ensure the bend met my ear at the right place.
I don’t need prescription lenses but many many frames in Specsavers can be glazed with prescription sunglass lenses, ideal for driving or reading on holiday.

I love the teal and cream sides.

Because it was such a glorious evening, we decided to go to our favourite Barricane Beach Cafe for another Al Fresco Sri-Lankan curry supper.

I’m definitely a glass half full girl, but either way, it still needs filling up, does it not?

I mentioned in my first Woolacombe blog post that within twenty minutes of arriving here, we were on Barricane Beach ordering Sri Lankan curry from the renowned beach cafe there.

We returned yesterday evening because it was dry and sunny, though still very windy as the photo of my son swimming (yes swimming, without a wetsuit) will attest.

Today has been the sunniest so far and I actually wore shorts.
With a jumper.
And a hoodie.

After brunch at the Beachcomber Cafe, an almost daily haunt, we went to the beach, hired a windbreak and set up camp for the day. It was windy and on the cool side and my poor children sat huddled in beach towels, determined to spend the day by the sea.

We changed for the evening and went out for supper.

My jeans are a very recent purchase and I’m thrilled with them. I’d been looking for something paler and more casual than my favourite skinnies and these tick all the boxes. My gorgeous top is one I’ve had for almost two years, yet it’s the first time I’ve worn it. It was sent to me as a thank you for one of the very first blog collaborations I ever did way back when. I absolutely adore the feminine broderie anglaise detail.

We ate at The Tides Inn where Wednesday night is curry buffet night. This was perfect for my hungry children and we enjoyed the friendly, laid back yet bustling atmosphere there. The food was lovely- a choice of the curries with naan, poppadoms, rice and chutneys.

Such a beautiful evening and for the first time since our arrival on Saturday, the sea looked calm.
